Also known as the Sabah Labour Department in English term. Established in the 1880s as 'The Chinese Protectorate' to meet the demand for the importation of immigrant workers from China into the country. It was later renamed 'The Protector of Labour'. On January 1, 1948, it was known as the Jabatan Buruh dan Imigresen (Labour and Immigration Department). In the beginning of 1954, the Department was renamed Jabatan Buruh dan Kebajikan (Labour and Welfare Department) until 1968 where labour and welfare functions were separated and the Jabatan Buruh (Labour Department) existed on its own. Effective February 2003, Jabatan Buruh Sabah was again renamed Jabatan Tenaga Kerja Sabah (JTK Sabah).
