I need help finding a suitable disk imaging solution to replace our Ghost 11.5 that will work with UEFI secure boot on new computers. We don't need imaging over the network.

Jan 30, 2018 - I am using Ghost 11.5.1. I was able to create the USB Bootable with adding the ghost64.exe but could not find it through the dos window. Norton Support; Technical Support. Clicking Next will overwrite any data that is on the thumb drive and create a bootable USB thumb drive that contains Ghost.

It has been fine for us to boot from CD or USB flash drive and write/read the image on USB flash drive. We have been using Symantec Ghost to make backup images of computers to reapply at a later time to refresh Windows or replace the boot drive. However, Ghost does not work with UEFI and Symantec stopped updating it years ago after Ghost 11.5 in Solution Suite 2.5.

Ghost works for us with Windows 8.1 and Server 2012R2 if we put the BIOS in legacy BIOS mode before installing Windows. However, a new computer comes with UEFI secure boot enabled, so we can't image it unless we reformat the drive and reinstall from scratch. It would be nice to be able to make a generic installation of Windows and apply the image to any computer, but applying the image to the same computer will be a start as right now we can't even do that. Acronis seems to have a few imaging/backup solutions, but not clear which is best for offline imaging.

There are different solutions for different environments and sizes - and all of them support booting UEFI Secure Boot machines and creating images of GPT disks offline. How many machines you are looking at imaging? What OS is installed there? Would you require more advanced features like live imaging, centralized management, reporting or you prefer to use old-school reboot-create image approach (not like there is anything wrong with that)? We prefer to boot from a CD or USB drive to run the imaging program and save it to a USB drive. This way our base images have no other software. We don't image computers for backup, we make only base images to restore clean Windows with drivers.

We have file servers to save files. Most of our computers run Windows 7, but a few new ones run Windows 8.1.

We have images of each computer type with a clean install of Windows and drivers. If we need to give Windows a fresh start, we restore an image for that model computer. I hope that Acronis is intelligent enough not to store the contents of swap files and hibernate files? Putting the contents of those in an image file would make it huge, aside from the security risk of saving those file contents. Symantec Ghost puts placeholders for these files in the image to know what size to restore, but no contents are saved. We invented the idea, Kevin:) Moreover, you can choose to exclude not just Paging and Hibernation, but any File, Folder or File Type!

And that's in Sector-level Disk Image. Only Acronis can do that:) For your scenario I would recommend to look at.

It will create images in the way you described, and it also includes ability to restore to dissimilar hardware - if you would ever need to. The backups can be saved to external disks, FTP, SFTP, shared folders on NAS, or even to Acronis Cloud. For offline backup you described, install the software and create Bootable Media from main menu. That media will allow you to boot the machine, create backups and restore. Hi Sam (Acronis). Is True Image able to copy a GPT disk to another drive without going through an image file?  I downloaded the free trial, but the free trial won't create an image or copy a disk and it says it can't copy a GPT disk. Also, does True Image handle the destination being a smaller drive? Sometimes we replace a HDD with a smaller SSD.

For MBR disks we can still use our Symantec Ghost we have used for years. What about specifying different partition sizes on the destination drive?

We really like that Ghost copies files instead of sectors which makes it easy to resize partitions on the destination even OEM recovery partitions.
